Write a winning entry

6 top tips for writing a winning entry

“How do I win?” is probably one of the most commonly asked questions of awards organisers. Whilst it will be the merits of your work which will ultimately win you an Airward, it is the entry which will show the judges exactly why.

Below are six things to consider whilst writing your Airwards entry:

1 | Short is sweet

The Airwards judges will be looking at a lot of entries each, which can take a long time to review. In your entry, take the judges on a journey to excite them as much as you are about your project. Moreover, make it clear why you feel the work should win, but always keep it concise.

2 | Keep your eye on the prize

The judging criteria for all of the categories is available on the website. So, before submitting, make sure your entry refers back to it as much as possible. Further, ensure you’ve hit all of the key points and paid close attention to the criteria.

3 | Baseline your metrics

Telling the judges that your technology has increased food production by 70% means nothing. In other words, having a baseline is everything. Tell the judges whether this statistic means 1,000 or 100,000 more items per week. This way the % increase adds so much more tangibility to your entry.

4 | Dot the i’s and cross the t’s

Always do a final spelling and grammar check of your entry. In the same vein, if you refer to an attached document or image, double check it’s attached.

5 | Put your best work in the right category

As the judges take time out of their busy diaries to support the awards, make sure you’ve entered the right category! Putting your best work in the most suitable category not only gives you a better chance, but it will avoid the judges having to get the categorisation validated before being able to mark it.

6 | Take your time

Give yourself plenty of time to write your award entry. While a project cannot win on the basis of a dazzling entry alone, neither is an amazing project likely to succeed as part of a hurried entry. The Airwards entry platform, AwardStage, handily allows you to save draft entries. Therefore, start early, take your time and revisit the entry if you need to. And whatever happens, don’t leave writing your entries until it’s too late!
